The national visa is the entry visa for a long-term stay of more than 90 days.
Important information
The Embassy explicitly warns against using third parties who offer assistance with appointment booking for a fee and claim to be able to secure appointments faster. The Embassy does not collaborate with „intermediaries,“ „consultants,“ or „agencies.“ These parties do not have any special access to the Embassy's appointment management system. Application forms, information sheets, and appointment booking are free of charge (excluding telephone charges).
Appointment Booking
Please note that the following information concerns the allocation of appointments for national visas (for a stay exceeding 90 days). Please read the following information completely and carefully, as the appointment procedure differs significantly depending on the visa category and requirements.
You should begin preparing your application as soon as you have plans for your long-term stay in Germany.
Online Application via the Consular Services Portal
For the categories listed below, you can apply for the visa directly online. Your documents will be checked for completeness as part of the online process, and you will subsequently only need to appear in person for the verification of original documents, the submission of biometric data, and payment of the application fee.
- Family Reunification

If you also wish to submit visa applications for your family (e.g., for your spouse or your child), please book your own appointment first and then contact the visa section by email (visa@kiga.diplo.de).
Waiting lists for au pair visa applications
If you wish to apply for a visa for an au pair stay in Germany, you must generally first register on the appointment waiting list to arrange an appointment. You will receive an email confirmation of your registration within 30 minutes. As soon as an appointment can be arranged, you will receive a further notification at the email address provided during registration on the waiting list. Currently, a waiting list exists only for au pair visa applications.
Inquiries regarding the waiting time cannot be answered. If the specified waiting time has passed and you have not received a confirmation email for your registration, please first check your spam folder. If the confirmation cannot be found there either, please contact the visa section.
Changes to your data since appointment registration:
If your email address has changed since registration, please inform us via email. Please also use the following subject line so that your email can be correctly assigned and processed quickly: „Request to change email contact details on the waiting list“
No prior information to the visa section is required for the following changes:
Passport data: If you have since obtained a new passport, please bring a copy of your old passport in addition to the application.
Name: If the name of the reference person was entered instead of the applicant, this cannot be changed by us due to capacity reasons. However, a new registration is not necessary.
In the event of other incorrect data being entered accidentally, please delete the registration yourself and register again with the correct data.
For the following categories, an appointment must be arranged via email at visa@kiga.diplo.de

- Family reunification if prior approval from the foreigners' authority (Ausländerbehörde) is available
- Family reunification according to the Free Movement Act (Freizügigkeitsgesetz)

Information for your Appointment
To submit your application, please appear in person at your appointment. Please pay attention to the details in the appointment confirmation. You will be asked questions regarding your application, and your biometric data (photo and fingerprints) will be recorded. You will submit your complete application documents and pay the fee there:

Visa fees are to be paid in cash in RWF at the current exchange rate or by international credit card (Visa/Mastercard).
Documents
Please do not send any documents to the visa section without being requested to do so – especially not before applying. Such documents cannot be stored or assigned here. Please always bring complete documents directly to your appointment.
The submitted documents must be authentic and correct in content. Forged or untrue documents will lead to the rejection of the visa application. Deception regarding the purpose of the stay will also lead to the rejection of the visa application.
The submission of documents does not establish a claim to the issuance of a visa. In individual cases, the submission of further documents may be required.
Please note that different waiting times apply to the various visa categories. If you register in the wrong category, your visa application may not be accepted..
